ΧΡΗΣΤΟΣ ΣΤΥΛΙΑΝΙΔΗΣ
Ο Χρήστος Στυλιανίδης είναι Υπουργός Κλιματικής Κρίσης και Πολιτικής Προστασίας της
Ελληνικής Δημοκρατίας από τις 10 Σεπτεμβρίου 2021.
Από το 2014 έως το 2019 διετέλεσε Ευρωπαίος Επίτροπος Ανθρωπιστικής Βοήθειας και
Διαχείρισης Κρίσεων. Την ίδια περίοδο ήταν Συντονιστής της ΕΕ για τον Έμπολα, θέση στην
οποία είχε διοριστεί από το Ευρωπαϊκό Συμβούλιο.
Από τις θέσεις αυτές ανέλαβε σημαντικές πρωτοβουλίες για την αντιμετώπιση των
επιπτώσεων της κλιματικής αλλαγής. Θεωρείται, δε, ο «αρχιτέκτονας» του rescEU, της
μεγάλης πρωτοβουλίας με την οποία αναβαθμίστηκε ουσιαστικά το ευρωπαϊκό σύστημα
πολιτικής προστασίας.
Ο Χρήστος Στυλιανίδης διετέλεσε, επίσης, ευρωβουλευτής του Δημοκρατικού Συναγερμού-
Ευρωπαϊκό Λαϊκό Κόμμα (2014) της Κύπρου, ενώ σε δύο διαφορετικές περιόδους υπηρέτησε
ως Κυβερνητικός Εκπρόσωπος της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας (2013-2014 και 1998-1999).
Κατά την περίοδο 2006-2013 ήταν μέλος της κυπριακής Βουλής των Αντιπροσώπων (εξελέγη
το 2006 και το 2011 με τον ΔΗΣΥ) και είχε σημαντική κοινοβουλευτική παρουσία και δράση.
Μεταξύ του 2006 έως 2011 διετέλεσε, επίσης, μέλος της Κοινοβουλευτικής Συνέλευσης του
ΟΑΣΕ και εξελέγη μέλος του Προεδρείου της το 2012.
Ο Χρήστος Στυλιανίδης ήταν, επίσης, Επισκέπτης Καθηγητής στο Τμήμα Πολιτικής της Υγείας
στη London School of Economics (LSE) της Μεγάλης Βρετανίας, Μέλος του ακαδημαϊκού
προσωπικού στην Ιατρική Σχολή του Πανεπιστημίου Λευκωσίας-Κύπρου και Επισκέπτης
Καθηγητής στο Ruhr Universität Bochum (RUB) Research School της Γερμανίας.
Τον Μάιο του 2021 ορίστηκε Ειδικός Απεσταλμένος της ΕΕ για την προώθηση και προστασία
των θρησκευτικών ελευθεριών και πεποιθήσεων, θέση που υπηρέτησε μέχρι την
υπουργοποίησή του.
Ως αναγνώριση του έργου του ο Χρήστος Στυλιανίδης έλαβε σημαντικά βραβεία και τιμητικές
διακρίσεις από κυβερνήσεις, διεθνείς οργανισμούς και ιδρύματα. Μεταξύ άλλων, για την
προσφορά του στην αναβάθμιση της ευρωπαϊκής πολιτικής προστασίας τιμήθηκε από την
Ομοσπονδιακή Υπηρεσία Τεχνικής Βοήθειας (THW) της Γερμανίας καθώς και από το
Γερμανικό κρατίδιο Baden-Wurttemberg. Ανακηρύχθηκε, επίσης, “Global Champion for
Education in Emergencies” από τη διεθνή οργάνωση Education Cannot Wait (ECW) και
“Political Champion for Education in Emergencies” από το Malala Foundation. Για την
ανθρωπιστική του δράση και τη συνεισφορά του στην συνύπαρξη και συμφιλίωση τιμήθηκε με
το «Βραβείο Ειρήνης και Συμφιλίωσης» της ιστορικής πόλης Γκερνίκα της Ισπανίας.
Ο Χρήστος Στυλιανίδης γεννήθηκε στη Λευκωσία της Κύπρου στις 26 Ιουνίου 1958.
Christos Stylianides has been the Minister of Climate Change and Civil Protection of the Hellenic Republic since September 10, 2021.
From 2014 to 2019 he served as European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management. During the same period he was EU Ebola Coordinator after his appointment by the European Council.
From these positions he undertook important initiatives to address the effects of climate change. He is considered the “architect” of rescEU, the bold initiative that upgraded significantly the European civil protection system.
Christos Stylianides was also elected Member of European Parliament of the Democratic Rally-European People’s Party (2014) of Cyprus. In two different periods he served as Government Spokesperson of the Republic of Cyprus (2013-2014 and 1998-1999). During the period 2006-2013 he was a Member of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus (elected in 2006 and 2011 with DISY) with a rich parliamentary record. From 2006 to 2011 he was also a member of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and was elected a Member of its Bureau in 2012.
He was also Visiting Professor at the Department of Health Policy at the London School of Economics (LSE) in Great Britain, Member of the Academic Staff at the Medical School of the University of Nicosia-Cyprus and Visiting Professor at the Ruhr Universität Research School of Germany.
In May 2021, he was appointed EU Special Envoy for Freedom or Religion or Belief (FoRB).
In recognition of his work, Christos Stylianides received important honorary awards from governments and international organizations and institutions. Among other, he received the Golden Decoration of Honour by the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Honorary Award of Civil Protection of the Land of Baden-Wurttemberg (Germany) for his contribution to the upgrading of the European civil protection system. He was also named “Global Champion for Education in Emergencies” by the international organization Education Cannot Wait (ECW) and “Political Champion for Education in Emergencies” by the Malala Foundation. For his humanitarian action and contribution to coexistence and reconciliation he was awarded the “Peace and Reconciliation Prize” of the historic city of Guernica, Spain.
Christos Stylianides was born in Nicosia, Cyprus on June 26, 1958.
